Graduate Program

Application Checklist

Individuals applying for admission to the MSW Program must submit all of the following materials before they can be considered by the Admissions Committee:

1. Begin by visiting the Graduate School Online Application page.

    - Create an account and you will be assigned an ID/password.

    - Submit the application online (www.byu.edu/gradstudies/admissions/applynow.php)

    - In the "Program Information" section select "Social Work, MSW" as the intended program.

2. In the "BYU Graduate Studies Online Application" Statement of Intent, instead of the generic areas of information requested, please upload a double-spaced statement (specifically for social work) that is 4-6 pages in length. Include name, BYU I.D., and graduate code number (#735960). Please use the following headings to separate each section: 

a. Your limitations and talents;

b. Your understanding of the profession of social work and indicate why you aspire to be a social worker;

c. Reasons for pursuing a master's degree at this point in your life;

d. Why you are applying for your choice of emphasis (either Clinical Practice or Research);

e. Your current insights on your experiences of growing up in your family of origin;

f. Elaborate any paid and/or voluntary experiences in human services, i.e., crisis line, formal field practica, summer camps counseling. Also include growth-producing experiences in leadership, travel, military or religious service, etc.

3. Open the MSW Application Department Documents file and complete the MSW Admissions Prerequisites form along with your application for a Social Work Scholarship and/or Graduate Assistantship (if interested).
   

    - Upload it into the online application under “Department Documents.”
  
    - The applicable forms must be uploaded in a single document no large than 500 KB.
  
    - The document can be uploaded multiple times after making alterations. Each upload will replace the previous document. The last document uploaded will be the one reviewed.

4. In the "Employment History/Resume" section, upload your resume with specifics re:education, paid and volunteer experience. Include dates.

5. Complete all the information in the "Honor Code Commitment and Confidential Report."

6. Complete all three of the "Letters of Recommendation for Graduate School."

7. Pay your application fee of $50 on-line. Credit cards only, neither checks nor cash accepted.

8. Submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended prior to application.

9. Standards for Social Work Students with witness signature (print, read, sign, and mail in).

Items 1 - 7 should all be submitted online.
