BSW Valedictorian featured in Daily Universe

Sara Hughes - Zabawa, BSW Valedictorian from Centerville, Utah, went to India to fulfill her academic internship. There was a need for a moral science curriculum to be taught, because these children come from a world where "if you need to steal to eat...you steal." New MSW Class Registration

New incoming MSW students (whose undergrad degree is not social work) should register for Soc W 603, 620, 630, 660, 698R section 3 or 4, and 1-2 electives (570, 580, 670 and 680 series). New incoming MSW students (whose undergrad degree is social work) should register for Soc W 603, 620, 698R section 3 or 4, and 2-4 electives (570, 580, 670 and 680 series). All 1st semester MSW students should plan on about 15 credit hours for Fall 2009.

School of Social Work Hosts 3rd Annual Conference on Spirituality

On November 6, 2008 the BYU School of Social Work hosted its 3rd annual Spirituality Conference title “Spirituality in working with Families and Children: Promoting a Strengths-Based Research Agenda.” The conference was made possible through the support of the Marjorie Pay Hinckley Endowed Chair in Social Work and the Social Sciences and the BYU Comprehensive Clinic.

Dr. Norman’s Ukraine Research Benefits Children

BYU professor Dr. Judy Norman has been involved with research on institutionalized children in Ukraine. The specific purpose of the ongoing collaborative research project is to ascertain the mental status of currently institutionalized children. This data is then compared to a community sample in order to provide hard data to those influencing policy regarding children living in orphanages in Ukraine. Dr. Jini Roby Travels to South Africa & Cambodia

Due to her background in international child welfare, Dr.Jini Roby has had the recent opportunity of spending some time in East London, South Africa, collaborating with Dr. Margie Maistry, a colleague in the Dept. of Social Work and Social Development at the University of Fort Hare in East London. For the last few of years, they have been studying the effects of the developmental approach to child welfare, the official methodology adopted by South Africa for Social Development. Student Wins Gilman Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education (IIE) selected Drew Mallory as a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in the amount of $5,000.

Mallory, who is a senior social work major, with a psychology minor, will begin an internship next month at the Doha International Institute for Family Studies and Development in Qatar.
