Why did you choose to pursue an MSW degree?
Since I was young, I knew that I wanted to be a helper... whether it be a counselor, doctor, lawyer, etc. However, in my last year of High School I just felt that Social Work would be my "thing." I received my bachelors in Social Work, and felt that getting a Masters soon after would be my path. I also know that with a Social Work degree, there would be an array of different fields I could experience; working with children, adults, older folks, adoption, adolescence, drug abuse, and so forth.
What are your thoughts on BYU's focus on a spiritually strengthening educational experience?
Obviously I'm biased, but I do like how the professors link spirituality with clinical practice. At BYU, the faculty express to us the importance of being professional, genuine, and compassionate. Also, just because it's BYU, doesn't mean we don't get a realistic taste of how life will be once graduated from BYU. Professors have done a great job by giving us an array of classes and skills to learn. The spirituality part is just a bonus to an already great program.
What are your thoughts on the family experience at BYU?
Well, I don't quite have a family here... but my classmates are absolutely my family away from home. Our class has become very close to one another. Due to the fact that we all are going towards one goal, we have almost all of our classes together and try to meet outside of class as well. Some of us have done internships together and gone to undergraduate school together. So, that being said, I love my BYU MSW Family!
Why did you choose BYU's Social Work program?
The reason why I chose the BYU MSW program was primarily for the tuition cost. Secondly, I knew I needed to be in a good environment to help me grow spiritually. Lastly, I knew the program was one of the best in the nation.
What are your career goals?
I want to be a school social worker at my high school in Hawai'i. I enjoy working with the youth and even adults.
Tell us about your BYU Internship experience(s):
For my Spring/Summer internship, I am placed at ICT - the Institute of Cognitive Therapy. I have learned so much and have only been here for 3 weeks! The purpose of an internship is to learn, and that's what you'll do! The faculty responsible for placing us do a great job in placing us as well.
