Why did you choose to pursue an MSW degree?
I did not even think about becoming a social worker until a semester before it was time to apply. I was going to do MFT since day one of my freshman year. Once I realized that the MSW program at BYU would open doors for me, provide me with more job opportunities, and give me the training to do therapy with individuals, couples, families, and groups, I decided that an MSW was a much better fit for me.
What are your career goals?
I love doing therapy and working with clients. At this point, I want to work with individuals, couples, families, and groups who are struggling with pornography addictions and hyper sexuality. I am also interested in creating parenting programs that help parents teach their children about healthy sexuality at developmentally appropriate levels. Overall though, I feel like every day I learn something new and think, \"Ooh, I want to do that!\" Then I learn something else and think, \"Ooh, that would be great too!\" Social Work is such a great field; you really can use the skills you learn in this program to pursue a variety of challenging and rewarding careers.
Tell us about your BYU internship experience(s):
I am having a wonderful experience at Wasatch Mental Health. This summer I have been able to work with some of the most wonderful people in Utah County. Wasatch Mental Health is the main Medicaid mental health provider in Utah County. I get to work with individuals struggling financially, emotionally, spiritually, and cognitively. I get to help them help themselves in many rewarding ways. I have had a caseload of between 25-27 clients including some couples. I have had the opportunity to be a co-therapist for a domestic violence women's perpetrator's group. I have also been able to organize and co-lead a depression group once a week. It has been such a wonderful opportunity that I believe will be a big asset to me in my future career.
