Why did you choose to pursue an MSW degree?
I have wanted to be a counselor for many years, but also love to work in groups and communities. Social Work is a perfect degree for me. I have struggled with minor mental health issues and had a daughter with Down Syndrome, so I have met many Social Workers I admire. It is difficult but very rewarding work. I love to serve and am honored to be a part of the Social Work profession.
What are your thoughts on BYU's focus on a spiritually strengthening educational experience?
This is another reason I chose BYU! I can't imagine having my education without the spiritual element present at BYU.
What are your thoughts on the family experience at BYU?
I have 3 children and it has been a challenge for them to have me in school, but they know they are still my number 1!
Why did you choose BYU's Social Work program?
I live close to BYU, I find the curriculum to be very professional and enlightening, and the tuition is affordable. This program stretches me but I learn so many valuable things that help me and others.
What are your career goals?
My goal is to work at LDS Family Services as a counselor, but am open to other Social Work options once my children are grown and independent.
Tell us about your BYU internship experience(s):
I am currently working at LDS Family Services on the Adoption Team. I also have 2 clinical cases. I work with birth parents and prospective adoptive couples, counseling with them on their options, and working as a caseworker for those completing Adoption Studies. I have taught adoption outreach classes in middle schools and facilitated birth parent groups. I am learning many legal elements and policies of Utah Adoption Law. I also help with any research related projects, such as evaluation reports. I will be assigned to the Utah State Prison in the fall and am looking forward to that experience.
