Recent Faculty Awards
The School of Social Work would like to congratulate Faculty members Marty Matheson, Ruth Aguirre, Sherinah Saasa, and Cole Hooley on their recent awards at the BYU College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences’ annual fall meeting on August 26. The awards ceremony was conducted by associate dean of faculty Curtis Child.
Marty Matheson was recognized by Brigham Young University as the University Adjunct Faculty of the Year. Curtis Child stated that “Marty’s service to the university and community and love for his students make him exceptional.” Professor Matheson has been teaching as a BYU adjunct faculty since 1999. In his time here, Matheson has served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Private Special Education Centers. He has also taught a wide range of courses.
Ruth Aguirre was awarded the FHSS Mary Lou Fulton Pre-CFS Award. Amanda Giraldi reported that, “Aguirre is a mentor to many students and has modernized the School of Social Work’s internship program. She continues to make many wonderful contributions to the school.”
Faculty member Sherinah Saasa was awarded the FHSS Excellence in Mission-Inspired Scholarship Award. Child said of Saasa, “Sherinah works with children and families in Zambia and with African immigrants in the United States, exemplifying the college's mission to address root problems and solve complicated global issues from a foundation of faith.”
Cole Hooley was awarded the FHSS Civic Engagement Award. Of Hooley, Child said, “Cole’s ability to be a masterful teacher and leader on campus has not hindered his ability to engage in his civic responsibilities as a Lindon community city council member. We recognize him for his enthusiastic relationship building skills and for being a role model in the community he serves.”
